If the oil pressure light is on it could be detrimental to your engine if you continue to drive it. This light comes on when the oil pressure is very low. Check the engine has sufficient oil by removing the engine oil dipstick clean it, replace it and pull it out again and check how much oil is in the engine. If the level is below the "FILL" mark (usually the lowest mark) then adding oil may overcome the problem and the check engine oil light may go out.

If this isn't the problem then it could be that the oil filter and/or oil ways are clogged starving the engine of oil. If you do regular engine oil services (we recommend every 10,000 k's on petrol engines & 6,000 k's on diesel engines) then it is more likely the oil pump is failing. Geddes can test this for you. We recommend you do not drive the car van or truck if the light is on. The "check engine light" comes on when any of the following problems have occurred. The engine temperature is dangerously high, the cooling system is low on coolant, an engine sensor is has detected an engine problem or could be malfunctioning. Unless you are confident that engine damage will not occur if you continue to drive, call us and arrange a car tow.

Once your vehicle is at our workshop we can begin the check engine light diagnostics. Geddes Automotive will connect their computer diagnostic scanner to your vehicle and check the error fault history for an indication of where the problem is. Geddes Automotive may try resetting the check engine light to see if the fault returns. Once Geddes have this information we can discuss it with you and provide various options of repair.
