REASONS WHY CAR WONT START & ENGINE MIS-FIRES ON PETROL ENGINES

There are many reasons why your car may not start or if it does and has a mis-fire. The following are some common reasons. For an engine to run it must first be turning over when you press start. If you only hear clicking, the starter solenoid clicks when you likely have a battery, starter or wiring problem. Check your battery clamps are not loose on the battery. So long as you are competent enough, try a battery jump start. Check our battery page for instructions.

The engine must wind over fast enough - if it isn't then you could still have a battery voltage problem - there may not be sufficient voltage to the computer &/or ignition system to create a good spark at the spark plugs. The electrics could be wet. Engines sensors and computers must be working correctly to create the spark. The wiring must not have any breaks. Computers, coils, leads and spark plugs must all be OK.

Fuel must be good quality, car wont start on old gas, especially if contaminated. There must be a good fuel pressure. There may be too much fuel inside the engine. Try letting it sit for an hour so the fuel dissipates - evaporates then retry. The engine must have reasonable compression on a number of cylinders. There must not be any water in the combustion chambers - such as a weeping head gasket or cracked head.
