CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT:

A slipping clutch can sometimes be improved by an adjustment of the clutch release arm if your make and model has an adjustment. A cable clutch is often adjustable but hydraulic clutches usually do not have any adjustment.

Providing your vehicle has an adjustment then a simple adjustment would be approximately:

$45.00 + GST

CLUTCH CABLE REPLACEMENT:

Most modern cars have non adjustable hydraulic clutches so do not have a cable clutch. For the cars that do have cable clutches the average cost to supply and install a clutch cable would range from $190 + GST fitted. If you provide us with the vehicle details we can provide you an estimate or quote.

$190.00 + GST

CLUTCH EXPECTED LIFE:

There are a large number of different sized engines, 4´s, 6´s and 8 cylinder vehicles. The more powerful the engine the bigger and heavier the clutch is used. It also depends on the driver and how aggressive they are. I have seen a really aggressive young driver destroy a clutch in less than 20,000 kilometres. Most vehicle clutches will begin to fail after 110,000 kilometres and be noticeable at 120,000 to 140,000 kilometres. Some higher performance clutches last over 180,000 K´s. A few last over 200,000 k´s.

CLUTCH NOISE — NOISE WHEN CLUTCH PEDAL IS USED:CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT WILL NOT CURE:

There are a few reasons why a clutch can make a noise, these are the main reasons.

1 If the noise begins when very little pressure is applied to the clutch pedal, the noise is most likely the clutch release bearing.
2 If the noise begins when the clutch pedal is more fully depressed then it is likely to be the spigot bearing in the end of the crank, these can squeal but not all vehicles have one.
3 If the noise goes away when the clutch pedal is fully depressed and the noise clutch starts again as you release the clutch pedal, then it´s likely to be the clutch lining rivets grinding into the pressure clutch plate or the flywheel surfaces.

To repair any of the above reasons will entail the removal of the gearbox from the engine. We can overcome the noise by replacing the failing part only but it is more cost efficient to install clutch kits complete.

CLUTCH PROBLEMS: CLUTCH ADJUSTMENT:

Slipping clutch problems. A clutch is more likely to begin to slip when under load like going up a steep hill or towing something. The car will begin to slow down but without changing down a gear the engines revs will increase. This is because the engine power is not being transferred to the wheels through the clutch — you have a slipping clutch.

You can test this yourself, make sure you are parked where you cannot cause damage if the car moves, pull the hand brake on really hard, put the car in second gear, bring the engine revs up to around 2,500 rpm and ease off the clutch. As the clutch begins to transfer the power to the wheels depress the accelerator to keep the revs above 1,500 rpm. Release the clutch pedal more and accelerate more. If your foot is off the clutch pedal the engine should stall.

As the clutch bites — the engine should stall. This action should be completed in less than 5 seconds. Do not allow the engine to rev and the car stay stationary for more than 5 seconds. If your clutch is adjusted and working and the engine does not stall but continues to spin the clutch then it seems you need to repair clutch or install a clutch replacement. If it spins too much your clutch will get very hot very quickly and begin to smoke and smell causing more damage.

If in doubt make an appointment and we can test it for you. We do not charge for this test. The cost is free.

DIFFICULTY SELECTING GEAR — WITH CLUTCH PEDAL FULLY DEPRESSED:

There a few reasons this can happen.

1 There is too much thickness of carpet under the clutch pedal.
2 If your vehicle has an adjustment on the clutch cable then we may be able to improve this by adjusting.
3 The hydraulic clutch parts like the slave clutch cylinder or the clutch master cylinder is leaking fluid, clutch is failing.
4 There could be air in the hydraulic system.
5 Some hydraulic systems have a clutch adjustment.
6 Clutch linings are new and need to wear off the high spots on the linings.
7 The clutch is worn out. We would need to test this for you to advise you on the repair required.
8 The spigot bearing is seizing
9 The centre of the clutch plate is out of true.

HOW CAN I TELL IF I NEED A REPLACEMENT CLUTCH:

Refer to clutch problems above.

HYDRAULIC CLUTCH CYLINDER REPLACEMENT:
(replace cylinder clutch slave, replace clutch master cylinder, bleeding clutch fluid)

A clutch slave cylinder on most vehicles is a reasonably simple job to install. The slave clutch cylinder is mounted in different positions on different vehicles, models and years. If the cylinder clutch slave requires replacement it is usually best to replace a clutch master cylinder at the same time — it saves time to only have to bleed the cars clutch system once.

Some vehicles have more than one place that requires bleeding clutch and of course some vehicles are much harder than others to replace the slave clutch cylinder and or the clutch master cylinder. Replace a clutch slave cylinders cost from $90 + GST supplied and installed. Replace clutch master cylinder cost from $250 + GST supplied and installed.

Clutch fluid bleeding: We have pressure and vacuum bleeding clutch equipment. The cost to bleed a clutch varies greatly; it depends on time and brake/clutch fluid used. Costs range from $60 + GST. We can replace a slave clutch cylinder and replace clutch master cylinders with second hand parts. Second hand parts have often done the same or more work than the part requiring replacement, they too could be about to fail. If you provide us with the vehicle details we can provide you an estimate or quote.

OIL VISIBLE — LEAKING FROM THE CLUTCH AREA:

There could be a few reasons for oil around the clutch or bell housing area.

1 If the oil is coming down from the top area it is likely the rocker cover gasket leaking engine oil.
2 If the oil is coming out the bottom of the bell housing then if it is engine oil it will most likely be the rear engine seal leaking. To repair this, requires the gearbox and clutch removal.
3 Some vehicles have the slave clutch cylinder internal of the bell housing. If the oil is hydraulic oil then it could be the clutch slave cylinder.
4 If the slave clutch cylinder is external then you will see the oil around the slave clutch cylinder.

If you are near a garage buy some brake fluid and keep topping up your clutch reservoir. Other oils can sometimes help keeping the system working but can destroy all the seals and cause complete failure if left in the system.

Pumping the clutch may help. Make sure the way is clear. Turning the engine off, putting into first or reverse then with the clutch pedal depressed as far as possible — remove the carpet if that helps, release the hand brake, start the engine and away you go. Sometimes you need a combination of being pushed at the same time.

This can sometimes get you home. Once the vehicle is moving if you can control the engine revs correctly you can change gear without full clutch release and if you´re skilled, you can change gear without the clutch. If you are skilled and changing from say third to fourth gear and in third the engine is revving at say 3,000 rpm as you pull the gear lever into neutral drop the revs to around 2,300 and pull it into fourth. The gears may snick but if you get it right it will get you home.

You may need to vary the revs so you can change gear without the clutch release. In your car it may be 3,000 revs and drop to 2,700. Going from fourth to third the revs are opposite — fourth gear at 2,300 rpm — neutral — rev to 3,000 and pull the lever into third. Practice makes perfect.

REPLACEMENT CLUTCH — WHAT IS REPLACED:

If you want just the cheapest clutch repair then sometimes you can get away with just replacing the clutch linings. You may end up with some clutch shudder. We can inspect the parts and advise you what is required for your repair clutch once they are out. If you want the job done correctly it should have: clutch linings, clutch pressure plate, release clutch bearing and spigot bearing all replaced and the flywheel machined. On some vehicles the flywheel should also be replaced.

REPLACEMENT CLUTCH CHANGE, CLUTCH REPLACEMENT COST:

Cost to supply and install clutch slave cylinders range from:

$90.00 + GST

Cost to supply and install clutch master cylinders range from:

$230.00 + GST

A replacement clutch varies greatly in costs. Rear wheel drive cars are usually cheaper to fit compared to front wheel drive cars or four wheel drive cars.

Smaller rear wheel drive cars range from:

$320 + GST fitted.

Smaller front wheel drive cars range from:

$420 + GST fitted.

Some four wheel drive vehicles can be:

$600.00 + GST fitted.

Some four wheel drive vehicles can be:

$850.00 + GST fitted.

If you provide us with the vehicle details we can provide you an estimate or quote.

NEW CLUTCH OR SECOND HAND CLUTCH:

We have fitted second hand clutches for customers but would recommend fitting a new clutch.

TRUCK CHANGE A CLUTCH:

The bigger the truck the harder and heavier the truck gearbox and clutch components are for a clutch change. Give us a call and provide make, model and year of the truck and we will provide a price for a truck brake clutch repair.
