BROKEN CATALYTIC CONVERTERS
Catalytic converters are designed to change harmfull compounds (gasses like carbon monoxide) into harmless
compounds and steam. The cat must be hot for this process to work. The steam causes corrosion of your
exhaust.
With age and use the cats can crack and usually begin to rattle. They should be replaced
before they break up otherwise the broken pieces can travel down the exhaust pipe and into the muffler
or mufflers.
When they begin to break up they usually cause more back pressure and the vehicles engine
can loose power. (Refer to the photo above.)
If the engine is not operating efficiently (burning oil, oil going into the exhaust, raw
fuel going into the exhaust) this will likely destroy the cat. We have removed cats that have melted the
internal parts almost closing off the exhaust. If you ignore the problem you can destroy the engine.
As soon as the the cat light on your dash board illuminates, seek advice.
Although a cat can be by-passed, this can affect the sensors readings for your engine control management. We understand that at some time in the future, vehicles will require cats in the exhaust to pass emission testing.
