WHAT IS A CV JOINT & CV BOOT? |
CV JOINT |
The full name for CV is Constant Velocity Joint. This automotive part is used on most front wheel drive vehicles. Your vehicles CV is located behind the front wheel. The front wheels, on front wheel drive vehicles are driven by the engine and move the vehicle forward and back. The steering wheel turns the front wheels of the vehicle left and right. The Constant Velocity Joint (CV) allows both movements. Most Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) vehicles have CV'S (CV joints) at the rear. These are located behind each rear wheel. |
CV BOOTS |
The CV Boot is the dust cover that protects the cv joint. If the boot is damaged, cut split or ripped, dirt, dust and small stones can enter the joint. These contaminants can mix with the grease in the joint, car parts, and cause premature wearing of the CV Joint. Geddes stock this used car automotive replacement part for automotive supply and fitting. |

HOW DO I KNOW IF THE CV BOOT OR JOINT NEEDS CHANGING: |
A visual inspection of the boot will show if it is split, the grease is usually flicked out and will be covering the suspension and sometimes over the back of the wheel. If your vehicle (car truck, van ute), is making a noisy sound such as a clicking sound coming from either the LH, RH or both front wheels, or from the rear wheels if IRS , that is the usual indication that the CV JOINT has worn out. Usually the clicking is worse when the vehicle is turning. If the CV Joint is not replaced they can break and cause a lot of damage (this can cost a lot more to repair and could cause you to loose control of your vehicle). You could be a long way from home or service centre when they break. If they break you could need to be towed with that wheel off the ground. A Geddes technician or mechanic can check your vehicle for you. If CV Joints are making a noise and you ask us to service your vehicle ask us to check them for you. |

WARNING: |
A split or cut CV Boot can cause a reduction in your brakes efficiency, (brake failure). If the grease flicks onto your brakes you could loose significant braking power on that wheel causing your vehicle to pull hard to the other side during braking. This could cause you to have an accident. If water or contaminants have entered the CV, the drive shaft can seize onto the CV, this can cause extra work to free up. If this has happened, in most instances Geddes can use a special tool that allows replacement of the CV Boot without the need to remove the CV from the shaft. |
