HOW CAN I TELL IF I NEED A REPLACEMENT CLUTCH?

CLUTCH EXPECTED LIFE

Usual 4 cylinder family 2 wheel drive vehicles.

In our experience very few clutches fail in less than 100,000 km's. Most fail around 120,000 to 160,000 km's.

Some vehicles have larger more heavy duty clutches and they seem to last 180,000 to 220,000 km's.

SLIPPING CLUTCH

The most common symptom of a failing clutch is a slipping clutch. If you are driving a manual vehicle up a hill and the engine revs increase but the vehicle slows down, this usually indicates that you have a clutch problem.

If you are driving up a hill and you just rest your foot on the clutch pedal and the engine begins to rev faster, then usually this indicates that there is an adjustment problem or the clutch parts are nearing the end of there useful working life.

A slipping clutch on a car truck or van may be caused by incorrect clutch adjustment in the clutch pedal, clutch lever or other external adjustment points.

Not having your clutch checked can cause more permanent damage - parts will wear more quickly and get to a stage when the vehicle will not drive.

Geddes' technicians may overcome your clutch problem by a simple clutch adjustment instead of a clutch repair or replacement.

DIFFICULTY SELECTING A GEAR

If you push your clutch pedal to the floor and have difficulty selecting a gear this may be caused by a failure in your hydraulic system or clutch cable.

It may be a simple repair such as adjustment or clutch bleeding. Geddes have a special pressure bleeding system, we also have a vacuum bleeding system to remove air in the system and replace old brake / clutch fluid.

It may also just be a simple adjustment or cable replacement.

CLUTCH OPERATION IS NOISY

If when you put pressure on the clutch pedal you hear a screaming sound it is most likely caused by a partially or fully seized or collapsed clutch release bearing. It may be worn linings screeching on the flywheel.

This is internal of the bell housing and the gearbox will require removal to replace the bearing and maybe the clutch. If the flywheel is damaged then we will need to machine it.

OIL IS VISIBLE

If you see oil dripping from the rear end of the engine (out the bottom of the bellhousing) then this can be coming from the rear engine seal. If the oil is getting to the clutch parts this can cause premature clutch failure.

Geddes can replace these seals during a repair and service if required or requested. If the oil is coming from somewhere else Geddes can advise you what repairs may be necessary.

WHAT IS REPLACED DURING A CLUTCH REPLACEMENT:

CLUTCH LINING

During a clutch repair or clutch installation, the clutch lining is the most common part to be replaced. When we strip your vehicle this will expose the clutch parts. To get your vehicle operating again, providing the other parts are OK we may be able to replace just the linings. This repair is not recommended but is a cheaper repair.

CLUTCH PRESSURE PLATE

It is advisable to replace the clutch pressure plate (cover), machine the flywheel and replace the release bearing. This is usually known as the clutch kit.

  

MACHINE FLYWHEEL

Photo #3 shows a customers flywheel after machining and refitting to their vehicle. The 6 bolts hold the flywheel to the crankshaft. It is always recommended that a flywheel be machined during a clutch replacement. If it is not machined then the imperfect surface that the clutch lining is clamped to may produce a shudder at the time the clutch pedal is released.

SPIGOT BEARING

Spigot bearings will be inspected when the gearbox has been removed. (Refer Photo #3, the spigot bearing is at the centre of the photo. It is pressed into the end of the crankshaft.)

They are usually very cheap and don't take much time to replace when the flywheel is off. These can cause a screaming noise if they are seizing or, if it is just a bush, may not have been properly lubricated when fitted.

CLUTCH FORK

The clutch fork is part of the mechanism that releases the clutch. When you put your foot on the clutch this fork levers / operates the clutch release bearing. Usually if the clutch fork has fractured or broken the clutch does not slip (unless worn), but becomes hard or impossible to get the car into gear while the engine is running and the vehicle is stationary.

REAR ENGINE SEAL

We find that it is not common that the rear engine seal requires replacement. (Refer Photo #3. The engine rear seal is located just forward of the flywheel. If it is showing internal signs of leaking (oil dribbling down the engine block, or in the extreme splattered inside the bell housing and over the clutch linings and/or clutch plate) then it is advisable that this is replaced while the gearbox is out. It is far cheaper to replace it while the gearbox is out.
