FAQ: FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT BRAKE FAULTS: |
AUTO ABS BRAKE FAULTS: |
Q. Can Geddes Automotive do an ABS brake repair in Auckland New Zealand? |
A. Yes we can we can repair your auto ABS brake system, we are brake specialists. |
Q. What does ABS brakes stand for? |
A: ABS is an abbreviation for anti lock brake system (Geddes 09 636 7064 Onehunga). The auto ABS system is a brake controller system that is designed to prevent any wheels locking up when the brakes are applied. They are more likely to lock in wet and/or slippery conditions. 09 636 7064 contact Geddes Automotive ABS Brakes Auckland. |
Q. What can cause my autos ABS (Anti Lock System) to fail. |
A. There are many reasons why an auto anti lock
brake system ( ABS ) can fail. The most common cause is lack of maintenance for instance not having your car
brakes (any vehicles brakes) flushed regularly. Part of a Geddes Automotive car service is to check the moisture
content in the braking system. Moisture causes corrosion of the brake system internal parts. The ABS system
has small valves which will begin to stick, if the valve sticks it can still allow a locked and skidding wheel
to remain locked up and cause your car to slide out of control. |
Q. What should I do if my autos ABS light (MIL) on my dash is on? |
A. This means the ABS computer in your car or vehicle has run a test on the system and found an error. There could be more than one fault and until all ABS brake faults are fixed the ABS light will not go out. Geddes Automotive have the brake specialists equipment, test equipment and a computer scanner that our technician needs to find each and every one of the faults. Phone us 096367064 for an appointment. |
Q. Can you just turn the automotive ABS light off? |
A. We can but that does not fix the autos ABS brakes. Your car / vehicle will still fail a WOF, the system will not self test and the light will not illuminate as it runs the self test. The WOF tester should know it is just turned off and should still fail the vehicles ABS brakes. 09 636 7064 contact Geddes Automotive ABS Brakes Auckland New Zealand for an appointment. Bring it to the brake specialist to fix it for you. |
Q. Can you test my autos ABS system and tell me what is wrong so I can do the repairs? |
A. Yes we can, our technician will connect our computer scanner and can tell you what the scanner reports! |
Q. Can there be more than one automotive ABS fault? |
A. Yes and until all faults are cured the auto ABS brake light will not go out. Phone Geddes ABS Brake Specialists Auckland 096367064. |
Q. How long does it take to repair my auto ABS system? |
A. It could be just a simple ABS wiring fault which is easy to locate, if this is the case then probably around 1 hour. Some faults take longer, could be: an ABS module (computer) failure, the autos ABS brake pump, a reluctor or tone ring, |
Q. My car brakes seem to be locking on and not releasing, is this a fault with the auto ABS brake system? |
A. Yes it can be. the abs auto brake system has a number of valves, seals, compensating ports and oil ways, Brake Pressure Modulator Valve, Accumulator, any of these can be blocked or not releasing. We need to run some tests to find which part is the brake problem. Phone AUTO ABS brakes Auckland New Zealand 096367064. |
Q. Can you test my vehicles ABS system and tell me what is wrong so I can do the repairs? |
A. Yes we can, however some vehicles are difficult to diagnose all faults at one time. It can be a process of fix one or two ABS brake faults, clear the faults from the vehicles ABS computer memory and then see if more errors are found or some autos ABS faults will not clear because they have not been properly repaired. |
Q. Can there be more than one ABS fault? |
A. Yes and until all faults are cured the ABS brake light will very likely not go out. If you need help call us 096367064 AUTO ABS Brake repair Onehunga. |
Q. How long does it take to repair my vehicles ABS system? |
A. It could be just a simple ABS wiring fault, if this is the case it could be just 0.5 hour to 1 hour. If we need to locate ABS brake parts and they come from outside Auckland New Zealand then it maybe more than one day. |
Q. When I just touch the brake pedal, the brake pedal continues to depress on it's own (pedal sucks down) is this a fault with my auto ABS brakes? Can you fix the brakes. |
A. This brake problem can be caused by both the vehicles ABS brake system or it can also be caused by the brakes hydraulic and vacuum (vacuum can either be from the motor or vacuum pump) systems. We would need to run some tests to find the autos brake fault. Call us and book an appointment 096367064 Auto ABS Brake Specialists Onehunga. |
Q. When I first start my car I no longer hear the auto ABS brake pump working. Does this mean I need a new ABS pump? |
A. Not necessarily, there could be a computer fault, there could be a power supply fault or wiring fault. We can test this and locate the fault or faults. Once we know what the fault is we can trace new or secondhand parts and give you the option of new or secondhand. Call Geddes Automotive ABS Brake Specialists Onehunga 096367064. |
Q. Can you use second hand ABS brake parts and ABS computers? |
A. Yes we can. We belong to and have access to emailing systems so that we can send out a request for parts. This system sends out requests to the companies that might have those automotive ABS brake parts in stock, they will reply with secondhand costs. We can then discuss this with you and order the part you choose. Second hand parts usually have a 3 month warranty on the part sometimes the labour is also covered by the warranty. New parts usually have a warranty on the part and labour. |
Q. If I pump the brake pedal the auto ABS light comes on, what brake problem causes this? |
A. Each time you pump the pedal on some vehicles the ABS hydraulic pressure is reduced, if the ABS pump is not working sufficiently to recover that pressure the ABS light may come on. There can be a number of reasons to cause this fault, the most common we have found is a power supply problem. If it is then this won't be very expensive and can sometimes be easily fixed. We have the brake specialist equipment to test your autos abs system. |
Q. I have fixed my vehicles ABS brakes but the autos ABS MIL light still stays on. Can you turn it off? |
A. If you have fixed all the faults you need to know the procedure to go through to turn the light off. We have a number of databases listing the procedures to take on each vehicle, some are involved. Some vehicles its just a matter of driving the vehicle, others are more difficult. If you bring the vehicle to us we can reset the systems for you. 09 636 7064 contact Geddes Automotive ABS Brakes Specialists Auckland. |
Q. I can hear a pump working continuously from under the bonnet and my autos ABS light is on. |
A. An ABS fault on some vehicles will cause the autos ABS pump to run continuously. Our technician needs to run tests. Our computer scanner should retrieve the error codes. Once we know the ABS brake faults our technician can discuss the required repairs with you. Call us for an appointment 096367064 Geddes Auto ABS Brake repairs Onehunga Auckland New Zealand. |
Q. My car brakes (van or truck brakes) are locking on without me depressing the brake pedal, what causes this? |
A. We have found that some vehicles can do this. The cause has been bad wiring joints, sometimes we need to replace some auto ABS brake parts, sometimes we can repair your parts. Call us Geddes Auto ABS Brake Onehunga Auckland. We are brake specialists in Onehunga. |
Q. When I use my brakes I feel the brake pedal pulsing, moving up and down slightly. Is something wrong? |
A. If your vehicle has ABS brakes then this can be normal if one or more wheels are loosing traction providing the ABS light is not coming on. It is probably the ABS control closing off brake oil pressure to the locking wheel, this will stop it braking and losing traction. If the ABS light is coming on then you may need an auto ABS brake repair. If the ABS light is not coming on then it is probably your brake discs (brake rotors) out of round (out of true) and may require the discs or brake drums to be machined. If they are undersize (too thin) you may need replacement discs & pads. Call us 096367064 ABS Brake Onehunga Auckland New Zealand. |
BRAKE PEDAL PULSING - VIBRATING; MACHINING BRAKE DISCS / BRAKE ROTORS : |
Q. My brake pads are worn. Will you replace brake pads Onehunga I supply? Can you do this brake repair Onehunga. |
A. Yes we can. There is a choice of various quality brake pads we can supply & fit. We can fit your brake pads in Onehunga Auckland. |
Q. I have failed my WOF. The report states I need to equalise my rear brakes. What do I do? |
A. Most cars have self adjusting rear brakes so although
the car brakes can go out of adjustment there is usually another brake repair of the brake system required.
The most common cause for brakes needing to be equalised is oil on the brake pads or brake linings (brake
shoes). Another brake problem can be with the hydraulics, could be the equalise valve (proportion valve).
Geddes are brake specialists and have special pressure gauge tools to check this for you. This brake testing
tool is usually used on trucks, campers & buses but we also have adaptors to test cars. |
Q. I have failed my WOF. The WOF reports that my brake pedal is spongy or sinks to the floor. What brake repair is required? |
A. Usual causes are brake master cylinder failure, brake fluid leaking, brake fluid is too low, air in the brake system, brake pads or brake linings worn, partially seized or seized brake parts. We can check & fix this for you call us for brake pads Auckland New Zealand 096367064. |
Q. Can I fit new brake pads to my car without machining the discs? |
A. Van, truck & car Brakes work best if both
the pads and linings are flat where they meet - they match. New replacement brake pads will be flat but it
is very likely that unless you are fitting new or machined rotors your rotors will most likely have ridges,
groves and lips. The brake pads will not match the disc face. The area of contact will be greatly reduced
requiring more brake pedal pressure to effect the same braking. The brake system - rotors and pads will heat
more and quicker than if they were matching. This can cause the brake pads and/or rotors to glaze and this
can cause squealing. |
Q. When I put my foot on the brake I can feel the pedal go up and down (pulsates) or the car vibrates. What causes this? |
A. The most likely cause is that the brake rotors (brake discs) are warped. If your vehicle has ABS brakes and the ABS brake light is coming on on the dash, then you could need an ABS brake repair or auto brake service. Give Geddes Automotive ABS a call and book an appointment for a auto brake service or brake check. The initial test drive is FREE and we will provide a FREE estimate. 09 636 7064 contact Geddes Automotive ABS Brakes Onehunga Auckland New Zealand. |
Q. Is the pulsing / vibration dangerous? |
A. The discs or drums need only be slightly out of true (run out) and you may feel it in the brake pedal. I don't know of any brake tests having been run to see what effect there is on braking. My own opinion is that it could affect the braking. Badly worn or warped brake discs can reduce the braking effect, they can certainly cause annoyance. Call 096367064 for the brake specialists. |
Q. What thickness can my brake rotors (brake discs) wear down to before they require replacing? |
A. Geddes have the brake specialists tools to measure
them and the charts and computer programs to check the minimum thickness. If they are above this minimum then
we can machine brake discs (brake rotor) and brake drums for you. If they are below minimum they may require
replacement. We can also replace the rotors for you. |
Q. Why are they warped? |
A. The van, truck or car brakes may have been overheated causing the rotors to warp slightly, 096367064 or water could have cooled the disc unevenly when hot. Damage and/or wear to disc rotors and/or brake drums can be machined out on a brake lathe; Geddes Automotive have 2 types of brake specialists lathes. |
Q. What does it cost to machine my brake Discs? |
A. If you bring the discs into us at the time of writing the cost is $19.50 each plus GST. Most car discs are this price. Call us 096367064 to check the price to machine your discs. (Prices can change without notice) |
Q. How quickly can you machine my brake rotors (brake discs)? |
A. If you bring your discs or drums to us we can usually machine them on the brake specialists bench mounted lathe within 1 to 2 hours so long as we know they are coming. We can sometimes machine brake rotors or drums while you wait so long as you make and appointment. |
Q. I have fitted replacement new brake rotors (brake discs) to my vehicle now they feel as though they are out of round again - warped discs. |
A. A likely cause is they have been heated up by constant use then cooled unevenly. If you have been doing heavy braking and then stop the car, the area where the brake pads are will likely cool slower than the areas with cooler air surrounding them. This uneven heat distribution can cause the brake rotors to warp. Ring us 096367064 Geddes Automotive Brake Specialists and we can discuss your problem brake pad Onehunga. |
Q. How can I prevent my brake disc from warping? |
A. The uneven cooling process of your brake disc can be reduced by keeping the vehicle moving and allowing the brake rotors - discs to cool evenly before stopping. |
Q. Will you machine my discs in Auckland New Zealand for me? Do you have a brake disc machine? |
A. Yes we have 2 types of disc brake machine, on
board brake machine - lathe - this machines the discs while they are still on the vehicle; a bench mounted
brake disc and drum machine. The bench mounted brake machine is usually faster and in our opinion more accurate.
If you want to do your own brake pads repair and get us to machine your brake rotors or brake drums this is
the brake specialists machine we would use. |
Q. Vacuum brake systems, can you can you equalize rear brakes (equalise rear brakes)? |
A. Yes we can on either van, truck or car brakes. Vacuum can either be from the motor (engine) or a vacuum pump. Call Geddes Brake Specialists for Van Truck or Car brakes Onehunga 096367064. |

A. Yes we do. We have 2 types of brake lathes 096367064 bench type and onboard type. |
Q. I need my brake drums machined, can you do this? Do I get a MTA assured warranty? |
A. Yes we do and all our workmanship comes with the MTA assured warranty. Second hand car parts will come with their own warranty. Call Geddes 096367064 for any car brake repair Onehunga or a van, truck or car brake service. |
Q. If I have my brake drums machined will that equalize uneven brakes? |
A. If you also replace brake drums or replace brake pads with new parts and all the rest of your brake system is working properly for instance your autos ABS brake system is working properly then yes this should equalise (equalize) uneven brakes. BUT if there isn't any oil on the linings and everything appears in good order then it will likely be in the hydraulic brake system. |
Q. My WOF repairs report says I need an auto ABS brake repair. They told me the ABS light has to comply. What do they mean. |
A. If your autos ABS light is staying on it should not. When you turn on your ignition the vehicles ABS light will come on as the ABS brake computer system is checked, once the check is finished the light should go out. Some vehicles have to be moving before the light goes out. For an ABS brake repair in Auckland New Zealand call 096367064 we are brake specialists. |
Q. WOF repairs. The question we get asked a lot is is it worth doing the WOF repairs . |
A. This is my opinion! The older cars are often worth less than the WOF repairs but well maintained and the repairs kept up to date can still provide you a very inexpensive run around. Some cars we see the owners owe large amounts on Hire Purchase. The interest and fees on the HP can be far more than the WOF repairs. You still need to maintain a replacement car. |

ENGINE BRAKE / EXHAUST BRAKE: |
Q. What is an exhaust brake? |
A. This type of braking system is normally found
in heavy vehicles. trucks, campers and busses. They have a butterfly unit in the exhaust system that closes
off the exhaust on engine overrun - when the accelerator returns to zero. This action of blocking off the
exhaust creates back pressure in the engine and helps to slow the vehicle down. |

although van & car brakes can go out of adjustment there is usually another brake repair of the brake
system required. The most common cause for brakes needing to be equalised is oil on the brake pads (Onehunga
096367064) or brake linings (brake shoes). Another brake problem can be with the hydraulics, could be the
equalise valve (proportion valve). Geddes have brake specialists special pressure gauge tools to check this
for you. This brake testing tool is usually used on trucks, campers & buses but we also have adaptors

ABS brakes. |

REPLACE BRAKE PADS AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND: |
Q. I need you to replace my brake pads in Auckland. How much will it cost? |
A. Yes we can replace your brake pads for you. The cost varies if you go to our web site we keep updated prices in there. Most common brake pads can be replaced from $85 to $95 plus GST fitted. There are literally thousands of different makes, models, years and months of vehicles each having different front and rear brake pads. If you ring 096367064 we can give a FREE quote or FREE estimate for each application. It is easier for us if you have the above information for us. |
Q. I can hear a screaming noise from my front wheels, could this mean I need to replace my brake pads? |
A. Yes it is very likely! Some pads have what's called a tell tale which will make a squealing screaming noise once the pads need changing. If you replace brake pads Onehunga as soon as possible you should not damage your brake discs (brake rotors). However if you do not replace your brake pads soon enough you could wear your brake pads away and the steel backing of the brake pad will begin to scrap in the disc eventually wearing it away so much that the disc will need replacement. This will cost more. Call us 096367064 Geddes Brake Pads Onehunga Auckland. |
Q. I can hear a scrapping grinding noise from my front wheels, could this mean I need to replace my brake pads? |
A. Yes it is very likely. If your brake pads have a tell tale warning that your pads are low and you failed to notice it then it's likely that your brake pads have worn through the brake pads resistive compound and are down to the steel backing. The longer you continue to drive the more damage you are doing to your brake discs. We may need to machine your brakes discs before we replace brake pads. Problem brake pad Onehunga 096367064. |
Q. I have failed my WOF there is oil on my brake pads and/or linings. The WOF report states that I have oil leaks. Can you repair my brakes? |
A. Yes we can. There are at least 4 ways you can
get oil on your brake pads or brake linings: from your calliper seals leaking onto your brake pads and/or
discs, your wheel cylinders leaking onto your brakes linings, your diff oil seals leaking onto your brake
pads or brake linings, or a slit CV boot allowing grease to flick over your brake pads. |
Q. I have failed my WOF. The WOF reports that my brake pedal is spongy or sinks to the floor. What brake repair is required? |
A. Refer also to Brake WOF REPAIRS listed above. We have found at times that the customer has replaced brake pads Onehunga 096367064 incorrectly and the pads have worn unevenly, when the brake pedal is used the brake calliper piston twists giving a spongy feeling to the brake pedal. We have also found on extreme cases where the brake pads have been forced out of the brake calliper. |
Q. I have fitted new brake rotors (brake discs) to my vehicle now they feel as though they are out of round again - warped discs. |
A. A likely cause is they have been heated up by constant use then cooled unevenly. If you have been doing heavy braking and then stop the car, the area where the brake pads are will likely cool slower than the areas with cooler air surrounding them. This uneven heat distribution can cause the brake rotors to warp. |
Q. Why are there different types of brake pads? |
A. There are a number of different types of brake pads. They are made for different applications: some work best cold, for low to moderate speed drivers but these can start to fade (not work as well when they get hot; some work best mid range; some are for drivers that use their brake hard and long, these usually do not work as well when they are cold but have less fade when they get hot. |
Q. Will you machine my discs in Auckland for me so I can fit my own pads? Do you have a brake disc machine? |
A. Yes we have 2 types of disc brake machine, on board brake machine - this machines the discs while they are still on the vehicle; a bench mounted brake disc and drum machine. The bench mounted brake machine is usually faster and in our opinion more accurate. If you want to do your own brake pads repair and get us to machine your brake rotors or brake drums this is the machine we would use. |
Q. If I have my brake drums machined will that equalize uneven brakes? |
A. If you also machine or replace brake drums or machine or replace rotors & replace auto brake pads with new parts and all the rest of your brake system is working properly for instance your autos ABS brake system is working properly then yes this should equalise (equalize) uneven brakes. BUT if there isn't any oil on the linings and everything appears in good order then it will likely be in the hydraulic brake system. If you have fitted secondhand parts 096367064 then these may not be balanced. |
Q. Can I fit new brake pads to my car without machining the discs? |
A. Brakes work best if both the pads and linings are flat where they meet - they match. New brake pads will be flat but it is very likely that unless you are fitting new or machined rotors your rotors will most likely have ridges, groves and lips. The brake pads will not match the disc face. The area of contact will be greatly reduced requiring more brake pedal pressure to effect the same braking. The brake system - rotors and pads will heat more and quicker than if they were matching. This can cause the brake pads and/or rotors to glaze and this can cause squealing. Bring your car to the Brake Specialists 096367064. |
Q. My brake pads are worn. Will you replace brake pads I supply? Can you do this brake repair in Onehunga. |
A. Yes we can. We also have a choice of various quality brake pads in Onehunga we can supply & fit. We can fit your replacement brake pads in Onehunga Auckland New Zealand. |
AUTO BRAKE SERVICE AUCKLAND NEW ZEALAND: |
Q. Why do I need an auto brake service. |
A. A WOF check usually only covers a visual inspection without removing the wheels and a check as to whether the brakes are working at that time. Some WOF reports provide a written statement of how well each wheel is braking, others do not. These non intrusive reports cannot warn you that items like brake lining are almost down to steel. An auto brake service will provide you with this information. |
Q. What do you do during a brake service? |
A. During a vehicle service (except a Basic Service) we check whether your vehicle needs an auto brake service. We advise you of the approximate life remaining in your vehicles brake linings and/or brake pads. |
Q. What does an auto brake service cost? |
A. FRONT & REAR BRAKE SERVICE: At the time of writing a front & rear brake service ranges from $79.50 plus GST. This includes cleaning out the brake dust and checking your brake linings and adjusters are working. If the calliper slides are seizing then there will be an extra charge for this brake service if you ask for the extra work.
