Q. What should I do if my autos ABS light (MIL) on my dash is on? |
A. This means the ABS computer in your car or vehicle
has run a test on the system and found an error. There could be more than one fault and until all ABS brake

Q. Can you just turn the automotive ABS light off? |
A. We can but that does not fix the autos ABS brakes.
Your car / vehicle will still fail a WOF, the system will not self test and the light will not illuminate

Q. Can you test my vehicles ABS system and tell me what is wrong

A. Yes we can, however some vehicles are difficult
to diagnose all faults at one time. It can be a process of fix one or two ABS brake faults, clear the faults
from the vehicles ABS computer memory and then see if more errors are found or some autos ABS faults will
not clear because they have not been properly repaired. |

A. Not necessarily, there could be a computer fault,
there could be a power supply fault or wiring fault. We can test this and locate the fault or faults. Once

A. Yes we can. We belong to and have access to emailing
systems so that we can send out a request for parts. This system sends out requests to the companies that

this with you and order the part you choose. Second hand parts usually have a 3 month warranty on the part

Q. If I pump the brake pedal the auto ABS light comes on, what brake

A. Each time you pump the pedal on some vehicles
the ABS hydraulic pressure is reduced, if the ABS pump is not working sufficiently to recover that pressure
the ABS light may come on. There can be a number of reasons to cause this fault, the most common we have found
is a power supply problem. If it is then this won't be very expensive and can sometimes be easily fixed. We

A. If you have fixed all the faults you need to know

Q. I can hear a pump working continuously from under the bonnet

A. We have found that some vehicles can do this.

Q. When I use my brakes I feel the brake pedal pulsing, moving up

A. If your vehicle has ABS brakes then this can be
normal if one or more wheels are loosing traction providing the ABS light is not coming on. It is probably
the ABS control closing off brake oil pressure to the locking wheel, this will stop it braking and losing

Q. I have failed my WOF. The WOF reports that my brake pedal is

A. Usual causes are brake master cylinder failure,
brake fluid leaking, brake fluid is too low, air in the brake system, brake pads or brake linings worn, partially

Q. Can I fit new brake pads to my car without machining the discs? |
A. Van, truck & car Brakes work best if both
the pads and linings are flat where they meet - they match. New replacement brake pads will be flat but it
is very likely that unless you are fitting new or machined rotors your rotors will most likely have ridges,
groves and lips. The brake pads will not match the disc face. The area of contact will be greatly reduced
requiring more brake pedal pressure to effect the same braking. The brake system - rotors and pads will heat
more and quicker than if they were matching. This can cause the brake pads and/or rotors to glaze and this
can cause squealing.

Q. When I put my foot on the brake I can feel the pedal go up and
down (pulsates) or the car vibrates. What causes this? |
A. The most likely cause is that the brake rotors

Q. Is the pulsing / vibration dangerous? |
A. The discs or drums need only be slightly out of
true (run out) and you may feel it in the brake pedal. I don't know of any brake tests having been run to
see what effect there is on braking. My own opinion is that it could affect the braking. Badly worn or warped

Q. What thickness can my brake rotors (brake discs) wear down to
before they require replacing? |

them and the charts and computer programs to check the minimum thickness. If they are above this minimum then

Q. Why are they warped? |
A. The van, truck or car brakes may have been overheated
causing the rotors to warp slightly, 096367064 or water could have cooled the disc unevenly when hot. Damage

A. If you bring your discs or drums to us we can
usually machine them on the brake specialists bench mounted lathe within 1 to 2 hours so long as we know they
are coming. We can sometimes machine brake rotors or drums while you wait so long as you make and appointment. |
Q. I have fitted replacement new brake rotors (brake discs) to my
vehicle now they feel as though they are out of round again - warped discs. |
A. A likely cause is they have been heated up by
constant use then cooled unevenly. If you have been doing heavy braking and then stop the car, the area where
the brake pads are will likely cool slower than the areas with cooler air surrounding them. This uneven heat

A. The uneven cooling process of your brake disc
can be reduced by keeping the vehicle moving and allowing the brake rotors - discs to cool evenly before stopping. |

Q. What is an exhaust brake? |
A. This type of braking system is normally found
in heavy vehicles. trucks, campers and busses. They have a butterfly unit in the exhaust system that closes
off the exhaust on engine overrun - when the accelerator returns to zero. This action of blocking off the
exhaust creates back pressure in the engine and helps to slow the vehicle down.

Q. I need you to replace my brake pads in Auckland. How much will

from $85 to $95 plus GST fitted. There are literally thousands of different makes, models, years and months

Q. I can hear a screaming noise from my front wheels, could this
mean I need to replace my brake pads? |
A. Yes it is very likely! Some pads have what's called
a tell tale which will make a squealing screaming noise once the pads need changing. If you replace brake

A. Yes it is very likely. If your brake pads have
a tell tale warning that your pads are low and you failed to notice it then it's likely that your brake pads
have worn through the brake pads resistive compound and are down to the steel backing. The longer you continue
to drive the more damage you are doing to your brake discs. We may need to machine your brakes discs before

The WOF report states that I have oil leaks. Can you repair my brakes? |
A. Yes we can. There are at least 4 ways you can
get oil on your brake pads or brake linings: from your calliper seals leaking onto your brake pads and/or
discs, your wheel cylinders leaking onto your brakes linings, your diff oil seals leaking onto your brake
pads or brake linings, or a slit CV boot allowing grease to flick over your brake pads.

that use their brake hard and long, these usually do not work as well when they are cold but have less fade
when they get hot. |

is working properly for instance your autos ABS brake system is working properly then yes this should equalise
(equalize) uneven brakes. BUT if there isn't any oil on the linings and everything appears in good order then
it will likely be in the hydraulic brake system. If you have fitted secondhand parts 096367064 then these

are flat where they meet - they match. New brake pads will be flat but it is very likely that unless you are
fitting new or machined rotors your rotors will most likely have ridges, groves and lips. The brake pads will
not match the disc face. The area of contact will be greatly reduced requiring more brake pedal pressure to
effect the same braking. The brake system - rotors and pads will heat more and quicker than if they were matching.
This can cause the brake pads and/or rotors to glaze and this can cause squealing. Bring your car to the Brake

Q. Why do I need an auto brake service. |
A. A WOF check usually only covers a visual inspection
without removing the wheels and a check as to whether the brakes are working at that time. Some WOF reports
provide a written statement of how well each wheel is braking, others do not. These non intrusive reports
cannot warn you that items like brake lining are almost down to steel. An auto brake service will provide
you with this information. |

A. FRONT & REAR BRAKE SERVICE: At the time of
writing a front & rear brake service ranges from $79.50 plus GST. This includes cleaning out the brake
dust and checking your brake linings and adjusters are working. If the calliper slides are seizing then there
will be an extra charge for this brake service if you ask for the extra work.
