EXPLANATION OF WHAT A CAMBELT DOES: |
CAMBELTS: These are located at the front of most modern engines. They link the crankshaft to the cam(s). Most vehicle engines have a Cambelt (Timing Belt). When the crankshaft turns the cambelt turns the cam shaft(s). The belt has a series of rubber/type teeth that fit into gears. The belt turns the camshaft(s), the camshaft open and closes the engine valves. This operation was performed by a chain on most older engines and some modern engines. We suggest that you check your owners manual to see if your engine has a cambelt or chain. |
WHEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE YOUR CAMBELT? |
* IF YOUR VEHICLE, CAR, TRUCK OR VAN HAS A CAMBELT and * IS OLDER THAN 5 YEARS or * HAS TRAVELLED MORE THAN 80,000 KILOMETERS; * Some vehicle and cambelt manufacturers recommend 100,000 kilometres; then * YOUR ENGINE MAY NEED URGENT MAINTENANCE! * PAY FOR A REPLACEMENT CAM BELT NOW and * PREVENT POSSIBLE MAJOR ENGINE DAMAGE. |
WHY CAMBELTS REQUIRE CHANGING |
The belts deteriorate with age and use. The teeth and belt can break. If the cambelt looses tension or suffers damage the timing of the engine can change and cause major damage to the internal parts of the engine. This can happen without warning and a long way from help or home. Each vehicle manufacturer recommends when that belt should be replaced. We recommend that you check your vehicles handbook for their recommendation. Some automotive manufactures recommend changing the cambelt on a used car every 5 years or 80,000 kilometres, whichever is the sooner, some, like Subaru recommend 48 months. If your engine is older than 5 years, or has traveled more than 80,000 kilometres and you do not know if the belt has been changed then chances are it has not. It is not automatic that whoever has serviced your vehicle previously has changed the CAMBELT (timing belt). Geddes provide a FREE INSPECTION for a sticker or tell tale signs indicating that the cam belts have been replaced. During this automotive repair, Geddes recommend that the idler bearings and tensioner bearing be replaced. In some instances we recommend the water pump be replaced. Geddes Automotive Ltd technicians can change your cambelt and replace bearing for you during a repair and service. Phone for an appointment 636-7064. |
